Spirometry Testing

Spirometry measures how much air a patient can move and how quickly. It is the standard way to distinguish asthma from COPD, confirm a suspected diagnosis, and see objectively whether a treatment is working.

What the Test Is For

Diagnosis — putting a number to chronic cough, wheeze, or breathlessness.
Monitoring — tracking lung function over months and years.
Treatment response — measuring airflow before and after a bronchodilator.

What to Expect

The test involves several forced breaths into a mouthpiece and takes about fifteen minutes. Results are reviewed during the visit and considered alongside symptoms, exam findings, and any imaging or lab work already on file.
