Rapid Strep Testing

A rapid strep test checks a throat swab for group A streptococcus during the visit itself. Most sore throats are viral and do not benefit from antibiotics, so testing is how the decision is made on evidence rather than assumption.

Common Reasons to Test

Sore throat with fever — especially without the cough and congestion typical of a cold.
Swollen glands or white patches — findings noted during the throat exam.
Known exposure — a close contact recently diagnosed with strep.

Antibiotics Only When Warranted

A positive result means treatment can begin immediately. A negative result in a patient who looks unwell may be followed by a confirmatory culture. Either way, the goal is treating what is actually there and avoiding antibiotics that would not help.
