Nebulizer Treatments

A nebulizer turns liquid medication into a fine mist that is breathed in over several minutes, delivering it directly to the airways. In the office it is used to open up constricted airways during an asthma flare or an episode of wheezing.

When a Treatment Is Given

Asthma or COPD flare — wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath that needs relief now.
Respiratory infection — when a cough or bronchitis is causing airway narrowing.
Patients who struggle with inhalers — a nebulizer requires only normal breathing.

Watched Before You Leave

Breathing and oxygen levels are reassessed after the treatment, and spirometry may be used to document the response. Patients who do not improve enough are directed to emergency care rather than sent home to wait.
