Impacted earwax is a common and easily treated cause of muffled hearing, fullness, and discomfort. Irrigation flushes the canal gently with warm fluid, and the ear is examined before and afterward to confirm the canal and eardrum look healthy.

Reasons Patients Come In

Reduced or muffled hearing — often gradual and on one side.
Fullness or pressure — a plugged sensation in the ear.
Before an ear exam — clearing the canal so the eardrum can actually be seen.

Safer Than Home Remedies

Cotton swabs and over-the-counter tools usually push wax further in and can injure the canal. Irrigation is not appropriate for everyone — a perforated eardrum or a recent ear surgery rules it out — which is why the ear is examined first.
