Iron Infusion

Iron Infusion

Intravenous iron is used when oral iron is not tolerated, not absorbed, or not working fast enough — a common situation with heavy menstrual bleeding, gastrointestinal loss, or malabsorption.

What to Expect

Your physician confirms iron deficiency with iron studies, investigates the source of the loss, and determines whether infusion is the appropriate route. Infusions are given with monitoring, and iron studies and blood counts are rechecked afterward.
