Hives are itchy raised welts that can appear from an allergic trigger, an infection, or no identifiable cause. Persistent hives lasting more than six weeks are managed differently from an acute episode.

What to Expect

Your physician assesses for triggers and for the features that suggest a more serious reaction, starts antihistamine treatment at effective dosing, and investigates further when hives are chronic. Anyone with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat needs urgent assessment.
